Motorways

This morning I travelled home from Chester on the M53, M56, M6 and M50. The M6, yet again, was a stream of stop/start traffic. The cause? Accidents. Not, however, as you might expect, accidents in the direction I was travelling! No! These were accidents on the opposite carriageway that should have had no effect on my side of the road. Unfortunately there seems to be a tendency for many drivers these days to be distracted from the job of concentrating on the road ahead and, instead, to concentrate on the exciting things that are happening on the other side of the road. The result is that, whenever there is a crash on the northbound carriageway, you can pretty much guarantee tailbacks across 3-4 junctions on the southbound carriageway because of people rubbernecking. Not only that, I can’t imagine the number of accidents that occur purely as a result of this idiocy!

So what can be done about it?

Pretty simple really; screens! Let’s build screens down the central reservation to hide the opposite carriageway! It might cost a bit, but it should save a fortune in reducing congestion and avoiding the resulting accidents caused by people not paying attention to where they’re going.

  1. I don’t think screens down the central reservation broadcasting the events of the opposite carriage way will help one iota. Especially if they’re high-definition.

  2. Knob! – “Screen (n): A fixed or movable upright partition used to divide a room, to give shelter from drafts, heat, or light, or to provide concealment or privacy”

  3. You’re so techno. Screen (v) to test for medical problems. You’re choosing where you select your data from Mr McCabe; something you’re quite zealous about. Oh, shit, I am a Knob.

  4. It’s all about context but, then again, I did think about TV screens at one point when I was writing it; I just didn’t think anyone else would be knobbish enough to think the same thing 🙂
